Colorado Mesa University hosted Western State in a basketball game that would be one for the books. CMU’s basketball teams faced off with their rivals on Tuesday, January 31st and the outcome was very exciting.

The women played first and during warm ups, the crowd could sense the tension in the air. From the tip off the Mavettes controlled the tempo of the game. They were hot from the three-point line and didn’t let up. By half time CMU almost doubled Westerns score.  The second half Western tried to catch fire but was quickly put out by the Mavettes. By the end of the game CMU completely annihilated their competition. The score was 65 to 42. The Mavettes were ecstatic with their performance and sent Western home with their tail between their legs. Next to battle it out was the men’s team.

The fact that the Mavettes blew their opponents out of the water, we expected the same out of the men’s team. The outcome however, was quite different. Western took control of the game early on. They forced the Mavericks to bring out their A game, and that’s exactly what they did. It looked as though Western was going to run away with the game but by half time CMU made a little run. Starting the third quarter the Mavericks were down by 15 but still had plenty of time left to bring it back. CMU was giving everything they had but were still coming up short. By the end of third quarter, the score was 78 to 85. In the fourth quarter, CMU exploded. They seemed to be hitting all of their shots and soon made it a close game again. With two minutes left, CMU took the lead by one point. With the time winding down the two teams were switching the lead back and forth. In the end CMU walked away the victor in a nail biting game.

Next time these two teams face off, it’ill be great match up. CMU students and the community will not want to miss this rivalry match-up.
