Exploring the Outdoors in Grand Junction

Grand Junction is well known for its many hiking trails and outdoor activities. For many Colorado Mesa University Students hiking is a great way to get off campus while staying active and healthy.

There are around 295 hiking trails in and around Grand Junction according to gjhikes.com. The Colorado National Monument, a favorite location for many CMU college students, has thirty hiking trails. Only a short twenty-minute drive from campus the Colorado National Monument offers students a wide range of different hiking trails from short trails to back county trails that can span for miles.

Colorado National Monument is not the only place to find great hiking in Grand Junction. Great hiking trails can be found almost anywhere around town.The Old Spanish Trail spans 10.2 miles and takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete on average. This trial takes hikers to the banks of the Gunnison River and along the rivers edge. The trailhead for this unique hike can be found on 28 ½ Rd Grand Junction, CO in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Although trails like this can be hard to find they are often worth it. They offer new views and experiences for hikers who may feel like they have already seen everything the more popular trails located in the Colorado National Monument have to offer.

Colorado Mesa University student, Trevor Gantenbein, is one of many students who enjoys hiking around Grand Junction, “The Monument is a cool area to go hang out and walk. The Mesa is also really cool. You can go look at lakes and nice open areas. But I like going and seeing what is out there.”

For many college students hiking offers a break from the normal campus scene. It also offers health benefits to busy students. Hiking helps people stay fit and can help tone muscles. Out doors activities, such as hiking, can even lower the risk of depression according to the Stanford News article “Stanford researchers find mental health prescription: Nature” by Rob Jordan.Hiking is a great activity for college students. With the almost unlimited amount of hiking trails in and around Grand Junction Colorado Mesa University students have the perfect opportunity to go out and find their favorite hiking trail.
